Triathlon Bound – Part 1

I guess I will start by looking the part, sorta..

So I’m going to do a Triathlon. Why do I feel dirty when I say that? I guess I feel like I’m cheating on myself. I ride bikes, and all I know about running is that it ruins peoples riding and most people drown in open water swims, right? What am I doing…? Weather or not this is my demise as a recreational athlete and a person in general, I’m doing a triathlon and I can’t help but be excited about it.

First, I want to blame this whole mess on John Sims. Over a year ago, I got to know him as a customer, and he quickly became a good friend. John is a local radiologist and an individual who is very driven. He is focused and set’s goals for himself, often beyond his abilities, and goes after them. This is a man I respect. When he started talking about doing a triathlon together, I had a hard time saying no.

“ John I can’t swim.” I said, thinking that would dissuade him. “I’ll get us a coach, and we will start training together.” I’m thinking, seriously, I will probably just drown. “We will take it easy and go at your pace. ” Crap, I’m in.  So we picked out our race, the Granite Man off road triathlon on July 24th, and we start training next week. I really don’t know how it is going to go, but I’m excited.

I think that the physical and mental gains will be amazing. There is really nothing quite like pushing myself beyond my limits. Doing something I KNEW I couldn’t do is the most rewarding. I think that training for and competing in this Triathlon will challenge me in a way that I have never experienced before. The next 7 months should be very exciting.

While I was hatching this triathlon plan, I began thinking this blog would be a fun way to share my ups and downs. It’s going to be down right hilarious to watch me stumble though becoming a runner and a swimmer. I can just barley stay afloat and I only learned to do that when I was 21. Here it comes, Eric becomes a tri- geek and probably likes it. This should be good, check back next week for updates!
